Everybody into the Pool! (the Carpool, that is…)
[ Read the PDF version of this press release here ]
January 02, 2007 - Pittsburgh, PA; You live in a small town north of Pittsburgh and you work in the Airport Corridor. You’d like to carpool to work, but you don’t know anyone with the same commute. What do you do?
If you’re Rod Frisk, you register with the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission’s CommuteInfo program. CommuteInfo’s many services include matching people with others who want to be part of a vanpool or carpool.
Rod is an Administrative Law Judge for the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board. At his Parkway Center office in Greentree, he adjudicates liquor code citations brought by the State Police.
“When I worked Downtown, there were a lot of people commuting from Ellwood City, Zelienople, and other places near where I live,” he says. “But when I started working here in Greentree, it was a different story. There aren’t so many people making that particular commute.”
For a while, Rod carpooled into the city and took a bus to Greentree—but that took a great deal of time. And, over the years, the vision impairment that keeps Rod from driving became worse, so taking the bus became difficult. He sometimes managed to find carpools by posting signs on office bulletin boards and networking with friends and colleagues, but transfers and retirements invariably sent him back to “square one.”Then Rod registered with CommuteInfo, and this spring a possible match was found, identifying a woman wanting to carpool to Greentree from Rod’s area. The woman found one rider on her own, and met Rod through CommuteInfo.
The three meet up each morning at the Park and Ride lot at the I-79 Evans City exit and together make the 35-minute trip to Greentree. “Most of the time we talk,” says Rod. “If everybody’s whipped at the end of the day, sometimes we’ll have the radio on—but mostly it’s conversation.”
That companionship, Rod believes, is an under-recognized benefit of ridesharing. He says, “A lot of people focus on the cost savings, and those are important—I hear that CommuteInfo sees a rise in registrations when gas prices go up. Ridesharing also saves wear and tear on cars, lets you use the HOV lane, and helps cut our dependency on fossil fuels.
“But I think it’s the give-and-take, the company, that matters most. You get to know people, and it makes the commute go quickly—a 35-minute ride can feel like 5 minutes. I hope CommuteInfo grows so more and more people can find matches. It’s a real win-win.”
CommuteInfo is a program of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission, operated in partnership with transportation management associations, transportation providers, businesses and non-profit service organizations throughout Southwestern PA. The CommuteInfo program is designed to serve commuters and employers as a clearinghouse for information about transit, carpooling, and vanpooling. The program serves employers and commuters in Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Lawrence, Washington, and Westmoreland counties.

A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to Work
This Couple Will Be Sharing Much More Than a Ride
[ Read the PDF version of this press release here ]
February 9, 2007 - Pittsburgh, PA; We’ve all heard of a match made in heaven, but a match made in a vanpool? That’s how it happened for one special couple. However, their story doesn’t start in a vanpool—it begins much earlier. As children, Heather and Mike attended the same church. They went to different schools, so they didn’t see each other very often over the next 20 years. Like most young people, they were busy with their own lives.
Jump ahead to 2003. Heather starts a new job in downtown Pittsburgh, and decides to make her life a little less hectic by riding in a vanpool to work. She doesn’t know it yet, but she’s about to become reacquainted with someone from her past, someone who would become a big part of her future.
Mike had already been riding the van for 3 years. He didn’t even recognize Heather her first day. Heather had remained active in the church and through that, got reacquainted with Mike’s family. Heather and Mike began sharing a seat on the van.
Over the years, as happens in many vanpools, the riders began sharing stories and got to know each other pretty well. Many became good friends, and in February of 2005, the group went out to celebrate Mike's birthday. Mike and Heather had such a great time together that they started dating. "We spend two hours a day commuting to and from downtown Pittsburgh. It's nice to be able to share that time together," Mike said.
Less than a year later, the couple became engaged and they were married on October 14, 2006. "I never expected to find my husband in the vanpool!" Heather said.

Believe it or not, this is not the first time this has happened. Over the 30 years the CommuteInfo vanpool program has been in existence there have been other marriages and many, many friendships formed.

For Immediate Release—

PITTSBURGH— The Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission (SPC) wants all commuters to be aware of the commuting options available in Southwestern Pennsylvania by proclaiming May to be CommuteInfosm Commute Options Awareness Month.
“Ridesharing is an excellent alternative to driving alone,” said Jim Hassinger, SPC Executive Director. “CommuteInfosm Commute Options Awareness Month is a great time for commuters to learn more about not only ridesharing, but also transit, walking and biking—all the options available for today’s commuters.”
As gas prices steadily increase, many of us are looking for ways to save some money. Every day, approximately 78% of the region’s commuters drive alone to work. And, about 60% of the region’s workers travel outside of their resident municipality to their job. That can add up to lots of money spent on gas. Alternatives to driving alone, like carpooling, using public transit or biking to work, are just a few ways to lower your bill at the gas pump.
CommuteInfosm is a program of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission, operated in partnership with transportation management associations, transportation providers, businesses and non-profit service organizations throughout Southwestern PA. The CommuteInfosm program is designed to serve commuters and employers as a clearinghouse for information about transit, carpooling, and vanpooling. The program serves employers and commuters in Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Lawrence, Washington, and Westmoreland counties.
For more information about CommuteInfo and commuter alternatives, please visit www.commuteinfo.org, or call toll free 1-888-819-6110.
May also includes National Transportation Week, National Bike to Work Day, National Employee Health and Fitness Day, National Try Transit Week, and National Clean Air Week.
