PITTSBURGH—Commuters looking for alternatives to driving alone to work everyday will soon get the sign they’ve been waiting for. SPC’s CommuteInfo program has teamed up with PENNDOT to install new informational signs throughout the region. Blue and white signs along heavily traveled roadways will encourage regional commuters to call for “Vanpool, carpool, transit info 1-888-819-6110” or visit www.CommuteInfo.org.
The first 25 commuters to register on CommuteInfo’s website who include the location of their “sign sighting” will receive a special incentive. Register for free online at www.CommuteInfo.org or by calling 1-888-819-6110.
CommuteInfo is a program of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission operated in partnership with transportation management associations, transportation providers, businesses and non-profit service organizations throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania. CommuteInfo offers a wide range of services to commuters within the region, including a toll free number for information and referrals, telecommuting resources, vanpool/carpool rider matching, transit/biking/walking resources, as well as park & ride lot maps.
CommuteInfo promotes regional commuter ridesharing initiatives by reaching out to area employers, transit providers, professional organizations, and current and potential ridesharers. CommuteInfo is a program of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission operated in partnership with transportation management associations, transportation providers, businesses and non-profit service organizations throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania.
With more than 2,200 commuters already enrolled, CommuteInfo is well on the way to demonstrating how a strong and effective ridesharing program can benefit the region in many ways, such as:
The Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission (SPC) is the region's forum for collaboration, planning and public decision-making. As the designated Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the ten-county region including the City of Pittsburgh and the counties of Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Lawrence, Washington, and Westmoreland, SPC is responsible for planning and prioritizing the use of all state and federal transportation funds allocated to the region. As the Local Development District (LDD) and Economic Development District for Southwestern Pennsylvania (as designated by the U.S. Appalachian Regional Commission and the U.S. Department of Commerce), SPC establishes regional economic development priorities and provides a wide range of public services to the region.

10/15/03: SPC Promotes Commuter Alternatives
PITTSBURGH—Would Pittsburgh commuters rather spend two weeks on vacation or waiting in traffic? According to the Urban Mobility Report of 2002, the answer is in traffic. Commuters who are tired of battling congestion and circling for parking can learn about alternatives on Communities in Motion Day October 16, sponsored by Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission’s CommuteInfo program.
Commuters will be able to sit inside an actual van used by area vanpools, talk with Port Authority representatives about bus/light rail options, and speak to CommuteInfo representatives about other ridesharing options from 11 am – 2 pm Thursday, October 16 in the lobby of the Verizon Building at 201 Stanwix Street at the corner of Boulevard of the Allies.
Communities In Motion is the public transportation industry’s special day to educate, promote and celebrate the benefits of public transportation and alternatives to driving solo. CommuteInfo is organizing this local event to promote Communities In Motion Day.
With the support of partner agencies, the CommuteInfo program oversees and promotes regional commuter ridesharing initiatives by reaching out to area employers, transit providers, professional organizations, current ridesharers and potential ridesharers. The goal of the program is to provide viable options, incentives and encouragement so that employers promote and commuters choose ridesharing at least twice a week.
With already more than 1,700 commuters enrolled, CommuteInfo is off to a strong start. A strong ridesharing program can benefit the region in many ways:
CommuteInfo offers a wide range of services to employers and commuters within the region, such as a toll free phone number for information and referrals, telecommuting resources, vanpool/carpool rider matching, transit/biking/walking resources, park and ride lot maps, and transportation resource fair lists. CommuteInfo provides a coordinated transportation demand management strategy for 10 counties in the region, including Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Lawrence, Washington, and Westmoreland as well as the City of Pittsburgh.
SPC is no newcomer to ridesharing, having been an early proponent of alternative commuter options since the “energy crunch” days of the 1970s. At that time, SPC was instrumental in initiating a third-party vanpool program and started a call-in service for ridesharing information and assistance. SPC has always been engaged in ongoing outreach efforts to encourage major downtown employers to participate in the program and to promote ridesharing among their employees. Throughout the years, ridesharing promotional efforts have intensified during two “oil crises,” two transit strikes, and reconstruction of major transportation facilities.
SPC is the leading public forum for region-wide collaboration and decision-making for southwestern Pennsylvania. As the federally designated Metropolitan Planning Organization, Economic Development District, and the Local Development District, SPC connects communities to state and federal transportation funding, plans the region’s economic development strategy in partnership with the counties, and facilitates business development. For more information on SPC, visit their website www.spcregion.org. For more information about CommuteInfo and ridematching, visit them online at www.CommuteInfo.org or call toll free 1-888-819-6110.

August 2004: Simplify Your Life: Try Vanpooling
PITTSBURGH-In honor of National Simplify Your Life Week (August 1 - 7th), SPC's CommuteInfo program will be offering free trial rides to potential vanpool riders in Southwestern Pennsylvania. Vanpools are one way hundreds of regional commuters simplify their commute to and from work.
Every day over 40 vanpools in the region carry over 600 passengers-most of whom say they joined a vanpool for the convenience. One long-time vanpool participant says he likes being able to save money on gas, maintenance, and insurance for his own car and not having to fight traffic everyday.
Anyone interested in taking a trial ride can register online with CommuteInfo at www.CommuteInfo.org or by calling 1-888-819-6110 by July 28th. CommuteInfo staff will help you find a matching vanpool route or other commuting alternatives. Rides will be arranged for the week of August 1 - 7th.

May 2004: CommuteInfo, a 2004 Smart Growth Partnership of Westmoreland County Certificate of Merit honoree
PITTSBURGH- The CommuteInfo program has been selected as a 2004 Smart Growth Partnership of Westmoreland County Certificate of Merit honoree! This award is given in recognition of the program's work providing commuting alternatives and encouragement of community and stakeholder collaboration in development decisions.
Earlier this month, the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission (SPC) proclaimed May to be CommuteInfo Commute Options Awareness Month because they wanted all commuters to be aware of the commuting options available in Southwestern Pennsylvania.
As gas prices steadily increase, many of us are looking for ways to save some money. Every day, approximately 60% of the region's 1.5 million workers have to travel outside of their resident municipality to work. That adds up to lots of driving and lots of money spent on gas. Alternatives to driving alone, like carpooling, using public transit or biking to work, are just a few ways to lower your bill at the gas pump.
