A Better Way to Work for Employees in Butler County
[ Read the PDF version of this press release here ]
March 6, 2008 - Pittsburgh, PA; For a long time, the employees at the “Iron Mountain” facility near Boyers (Butler County) have had only two choices for getting to work: either drive alone or catch a ride with a coworker. With gas prices staying high, the employees decided they needed to find a better way to work. Now, the employees, local transit authorities and CommuteInfoSM are working together to make that happen.
Iron MountainTM operates the underground, secure facility located near Boyers that houses several employers with over 3,000 people traveling there to work every day.
Responding to these needs, New Castle Area Transit Authority began providing transit service from New Castle to the facility twice a day. And since January of this year, Butler Transit Authority provides service from Butler to the facility twice a day. The ridership on these routes continues to increase steadily.
The local transit operators and CommuteInfoSM staff continue to work with the employers and employees in the Iron MountainTM facility to help them find a better way to work! According to Mr. Carmen Rozzi, a member of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission who works at the facility, “The benefits of people using public transportation are institutionally recognized by the Congress of the United States and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The New Castle Transit Authority has been providing service from New Castle to the underground facility, via Route 108, for the past five years. This opportunity has been greatly enhanced with the addition of the Butler Transit Authority in January of this year, via Route 8 and Route 308, and the CommuteInfoSM Program administered by the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission for those who live in outlying counties not serviced by public transportation.”

May Is CommuteInfo Commute Options Awareness Month
[ Read the PDF version of this press release here ]
PITTSBURGH, PA. — The Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission (SPC) wants all commuters to be aware of the commuting options available in Southwestern Pennsylvania by proclaiming May to be CommuteInfo Commute Options Awareness Month.
One the first day of CommuteInfo Commute Options Awareness Month 2008, 2 new vans were delivered to eagerly awaiting vanpool groups with participants travelling to Boyers in Butler County for work. With these two new vanpools, there are now a total of six vanpool groups travelling to that location alone. A total of 38 vanpool groups travel throughout the region, helping commuters find a better way to work.
As gas prices steadily increase, many of us are looking for ways to save some money. Every day, approximately 60% of the region’s 1.5 million workers travel outside their resident municipality to work. That can add up to lots of money spent on gas, parking, maintenance, etc. Alternatives to driving alone, like carpooling, using public transit or biking to work, are just a few ways to lower the commuting bill. Visit www.commuteinfo.org and take advantage of our Commute Cost Calculator to estimate how much you could be saving!
CommuteInfo is a program of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission, coordinated in partnership with transportation management associations, transportation providers, businesses and non-profit service organizations throughout Southwestern PA. The CommuteInfo program is designed to serve commuters and employers as a clearinghouse for information about transit, carpooling, and vanpooling. The program serves employers and commuters in Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Lawrence, Washington, and Westmoreland counties.
For more information about CommuteInfo and commuter alternatives, please visit www.commuteinfo.org, or call toll free 1-888-819-6110.
May also includes National Transportation Week, National Bike to Work Day, National Employee Health and Fitness Day, National Try Transit Week, and National Clean Air Week.

CommuteInfo Sees Over 81% Increase in Commuter Registrants
[ Read the PDF version of this press release here ]
562 people requested information about commuting alternatives during September. This is an increase of 81% from August. It is also the highest number of registrations received during any month in 4 years.
The Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership (PDP) has been working with the CommuteInfo program to encourage commuters in the Pittsburgh region to fill out an online profile to receive a free, personalized report of commuting options. Between now and December, anyone who goes to www.commuteinfo.org and completes an online profile will be automatically entered into a drawing to win one of three gift cards each month for downtown stores and restaurants, including Capital Grille, Six Penn Kitchen, McCormick and Schmick’s, One Oxford Centre, Saks and Macy’s. This incentive, combined with the price of gas exceeding $3 per gallon is credited for the increase in registrations.
“Sharing the ride to work can save commuters money, and now with the PDP’s incentive, commuters also have a chance to win,” said Lisa Kay Schweyer, Program Director for the CommuteInfo program.
“Mary M.” from Weirton, WV, a CommuteInfo program participant and one of the winners of the recruitment incentive, said: “I registered for the CommuteInfo program to try and save money on gas. My company does have car-pooling information and connects people for car pooling, but there weren’t any matches for me [at this time]. That’s when I signed up on the CommuteInfo.org website. Each day I travel approximately 25 miles from my home in Weirton to the Robinson area. This is 50 miles round trip and typically takes about 30-35 minutes one way. I would just want other commuters to know that it was very easy to sign up and use the CommuteInfo.org website!”
